In September 2021 we witnessed the official launch of BELLA, the new transcontinental link that interconnects the research network backbones in Europe (GÉANT) and Latin America (RedCLARA).

"To determine the degree of government implementation of ICT in Higher Education institutions in Latin America in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, to assess the changes suffered during the contingency and develop guidelines that guide HEIs on the path to digital transformation from the health emergency” is the purpose of the document, presented during the TICAL2021 Conference and now available for review and download.

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the world’s shared plan to end extreme poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the planet by 2030, is a main motivation behind a new collaboration spanning across the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Three African regional research and education networks, and two Latin American counterparts have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The overall idea is for the two continents to ramp up their activities in open science.

In early June, the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Brazilian National Research and Education Network, RNP, launched Eduplay, a university platform for audiovisual content. What is so present in our lives today, streaming audio and video for study, work and entertainment activities, began to be developed almost 20 years ago by the scientific community, at a time when YouTube did not exist.

Check out the speech given by the Executive Director of RedCLARA, Luis Eliécer Cadenas, during the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) session on “Arab Science Cooperation to achieve UN SDGs”, that took place (virtually) on Wednesday 23 September 2021, at the second edition of the UNGA76 Science Summit around the 76th United Nations General Assembly (Science Summit at UNGA76), held in New York within the organization of Intelligence in Science (ISC).

It’s more important than ever for national research and education networks (NRENs) to connect. The CEOs of CANARIE, Internet2, and RedCLARA had a common goal to work closely together and to highlight the research and education enabled by our network infrastructure and shared expertise across the Americas. With that goal in mind, a team of staff from all three organizations committed to regular meetings to explore what we do, who we support, and how we can better share our NRENs’ efforts.
