REUNA, Chile: In Chilean Patagonia, the University of Magallanes joins eduroam

The news that the world’s southernmost university has joined eduroam was reported in the August issue of Red en Acción magazine, published by the Chilean National Research and Education Network, REUNA. The community at the University of Magallanes’ Teaching, Healthcare and Research Campus (CADI) is a direct beneficiary of this international academic roaming scheme.
Located in Chilean Patagonia, the University of Magallanes (UMAG) is now part of eduroam, the global, secure Wi-Fi network for the education community. Created in Europe, eduroam is available in around a hundred countries, enabling students, researchers and staff at research and educational institutions to access Wi-Fi internet connectivity on all participating campuses worldwide. Thus, whether at their own institution or when visiting any other participating institution worldwide, users will be immediately connected to the internet simply by opening their laptop or using their mobile device.
The implementation of eduroam at UMAG was made possible by an agreement between the university and REUNA, as part of the Patagonia Project, which aims to strengthen connectivity and collaboration amongst institutions in the southernmost part of Chile.
Thanks to REUNA’s work, there are now 26 institutions in Chile connected to eduroam, expanding the possibilities for academic and scientific mobility both within and outside the country.
