Uruguay takes a decisive step towards BELLA II

On Wednesday 2 September, in Montevideo, RedCLARA and Uruguay’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the framework for cooperation regarding the Eastern Republic of Uruguay’s accession to the BELLA II project.

The signing was led by Minister Fernanda Cardona and the Chair of RedCLARA’s Board of Directors, José Palacios, and was attended by the National Director of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Services, Pablo Siris; the European Union’s Ambassador to Uruguay, Petros Mavromichalis; EU advisers Doerte Bosse and Jan Dzieciolowski; and members of the RedCLARA team.

This significant agreement formalises Uruguay’s interest in joining BELLA II and sets out a roadmap for developing the country’s participation arrangements and its access to the capabilities and infrastructure that the project makes available to Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

With this step, Uruguay is strengthening its commitment to developing advanced connectivity for research, education, innovation and digital transformation, drawing on the solid experience of the Uruguayan Academic Network (RAU), which has been connected to RedCLARA since June 2005 and is a founding member of the partnership that established Latin America’s research and education network.

BELLA II continues to expand its regional reach to build a digital ecosystem that is more integrated, resilient and better equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
