Appropedia Drives Global Innovation Challenge to Address Snakebite Emergencies Across Latin America

The Wellcome Snakebite Innovation Prize opens a £6.25 million fund to accelerate accessible, life-saving solutions for remote and underserved communities.

(By: Appropedia) SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR – July 21, 2026 — Driving open innovation across the region, Appropedia is proud to support the Snakebite Innovation Prize—a £6.25 million global fund supported by Wellcome and delivered by Challenge Works to transform the response to snakebite envenoming in four key global regions, including Latin America.

Snakebite envenoming remains one of the world’s most neglected tropical diseases, disproportionately affecting rural, indigenous, and agricultural communities with limited access to immediate medical care and reliable infrastructure. Snakebite envenoming deaths are preventable, yet they cause over 100,000 deaths annually and leave 400,000 people with life-changing disabilities.

To tackle this crisis, Appropedia is calling on multidisciplinary teams across Latin America, including Brazil and the Caribbean—from software developers, AI specialists, and logistics experts to service designers, healthcare workers, and community leaders—to design scalable, field-ready solutions.

According to Emilio Velis, the Appropedia Foundation’s Executive Director, solving complex health emergencies in remote territories requires combining localized community knowledge with accessible, open-source technologies:. “This is a great opportunity to tackle a neglected health issue, especially in Latin America. Knowledge and experience from diverse areas such as science, technology, and management can make a real difference in our communities.”

The competition features two distinct participation tracks:

Launch Track: Designed for new or adapted concepts that require validation and initial testing.

Growth Track: Tailored for solutions with a proven track record seeking to scale their operations and broaden their regional impact.

Applications are open through September 16, 2026.

To assist innovators in building competitive proposals and cross-sector partnerships, a dedicated regional support pathway has been launched:

Matchmaking Platform: An interactive portal where participants can create organizational profiles, share technical expertise, and connect directly with complementary international partners. Register to the platform via the QR code below or by clicking here.

Immersion Series: The third and final session on July 28th will guide candidates through the patient journey and the landscape of snakebite and technology. Register using the QR code below or click here.

SnakeHack: A virtual hackathon bringing participants from all sectors together with global mentors to refine and finalize their project submissions before the deadline according to the challenge’s evaluation criteria, and technical requirements. Click here to register.

Innovators, researchers, and organizations are invited to submit their applications or explore active partnership opportunities by visiting the official portal or contacting snakebite.prize@appropedia.org.
