SUBMERSE holds its final event in Denmark on the scientific use of underwater fiber optic cables

The SUBMERSE Consortium, together with its 25 partners, invites the scientific, academic, and industrial communities to take part in the SUBMERSE Project Final Event. This gathering will explore the future of using subsea fiber optic cables as an observation tool (submarine cables used as sensors to capture information from the ocean and the seafloor) and its potential to advance research in Europe.

The event will take place from 15 to 17 April 2026 at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, bringing together researchers, industry professionals, and representatives of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) to share insights, present results, and discuss the next steps for the development of this technology across the continent.

The program will span three days. The first day will focus on scientific applications, featuring a keynote address on use cases in geosciences and oceanography, along with hands-on sessions working with fiber optic data. The second day will be dedicated to project results, including updates from SUBMERSE sites in Norway, Portugal, Greece, and Italy, as well as presentations on data management strategies and networking opportunities for partners and participants. The third and final day will look ahead, with a closing keynote followed by sessions on future research directions and opportunities for long-term collaboration.

Over the past three years, the SUBMERSE project has worked to demonstrate how subsea fiber optic cables can be used not only for telecommunications but also to support research in areas such as seismology, oceanography, and marine biology. In this final stage, the event will provide an opportunity to share lessons learned, reflect on the project’s journey, and explore future development possibilities in Europe.

RedCLARA is one of the partners that has contributed to the SUBMERSE project as the leader of the BELLA program, the first initiative to connect Europe and Latin America directly through a fiber optic cable.
