Hackathon on Satellite Innovation in the Motagua River Basin
The Copernicus Academy Guatemala invites you to participate in the Hackathon “Tracing the Source: Satellite Innovation for Identifying Pollution Sources in the Motagua River Basin,” taking place from April 28 to May 16, 2025. The event aims to identify and visualize pollution sources in the basin in order to develop innovative solutions to mitigate their environmental impact.
The hackathon will focus on the use of Earth observation data provided by Copernicus, the European Union (EU) program, to address pollution in the region. Participants will develop tools to identify and visualize sources of contamination, such as plastic waste, industrial discharges, and agricultural runoff, using satellite technology.
This event is part of the BELLA II project, led by RedCLARA and co-funded by the European Union. BELLA II is a regional initiative that seeks to reduce the digital divide and support the development of the infrastructure necessary to consolidate and expand a digital ecosystem for science, technology, education, and innovation.
Among its specific goals is the promotion of new technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean. As a pillar of the EU-LAC Digital Alliance, BELLA II encourages the integration of Copernicus data and technological tools across various sectors, contributing to sustainable development and capacity building in academic, private, and governmental spheres.
In addition to fostering innovation, this hackathon will promote cross-sector collaboration and strengthen a multidisciplinary community focused on technological solutions for environmental challenges.
Students, professionals, tech developers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and sustainability activists are encouraged to participate. Teams will be evaluated based on key deliverables, including a Landing Page, a Business Model Canvas (BMC), a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with a demo, and a short Elevator Pitch video. These components will be essential to showcase the innovation and impact of each project.
