Article by Carlos Martínez Cagnazzo calls for action to accelerate the pace of IPv6 deployment in LAC

On the LACNIC blog, the Chief Technology Strategist (CTS) of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Address Registry addresses a key milestone in the evolution of the Internet: the progress of IPv6 as evidenced by global players such as Google and its implications for Latin America and the Caribbean.
“In March 2026, Google reported that, for the first time, more than 50% of global traffic reaching its sites and applications was carried over IPv6,” the expert notes in his post, highlighting how this change marks a structural transition in the network and presents challenges and opportunities for the region, particularly in terms of infrastructure, performance and digital competitiveness.
Since the development of the ALICE project, which gave rise to the RedCLARA backbone, the networks that formed this Latin American cooperation have been working on the issue, preparing their countries. The IPv6 working group remained operational from the start of ALICE until the end of ALICE2.
“For a regional company to remain solely on IPv4 in this environment is to intentionally choose a path of higher latency and lower reliability for its customers,” says Martínez.
The publication concludes by outlining four actions to be taken to ensure a successful transition to IPv6 and safeguard regional competitiveness.
